Zaven Garabed Hatutian, age 88 of Singer Island, Florida, passed away on May 17, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on May 8, 1929 in Latakia, Syria, to parents Garabed and Margarite. Zaven graduated from Latakia High School and the Presbyterian sponsored Aleppo Junior College. In 1955, with help from the Presbyterian Church, he came to the United States to continue his college education. With $50 in his pocket he boarded a boat in Genoa, Italy and came to the US. He worked his way thru school shoveling coal in the campus boiler...

Zaven Garabed Hatutian, age 88 of Singer Island, Florida, passed away on May 17, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on May 8, 1929 in Latakia, Syria, to parents Garabed and Margarite. Zaven graduated from Latakia High School and the Presbyterian sponsored Aleppo Junior College. In 1955, with help from the Presbyterian Church, he came to the United States to continue his college education. With $50 in his pocket he boarded a boat in Genoa, Italy and came to the US. He worked his way thru school shoveling coal in the campus boiler room and bussing tables in the cafeteria. He completed college and received a business degree from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA.
Zaven and Zartar met in Asbury Park, New Jersey and were married in 1959. They raised three children, Gary, David and Jennifer. Zaven worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company as an accountant and was a real estate investor in the Kansas City area. He adopted the nickname "Sam" from his coworkers at Pandhandle, a nickname that stayed with him his entire life. His life of hard work and perseverance allowed him to enjoy the winters on Singer Island in Florida and the summers with his family in Kansas City. While in Florida, he served as deacon for St. David's Armenian Church in Boca Raton. He also was the benefactor and instrumental in forming the St. Garabed Armenian Church in Kansas City. He lived a life full of camping with his family in the mountains, fishing the surf in Florida, and golfing with buddies.
Zaven is preceded in death by his wife Zartar, mother Margarite, father Garabed, and sister Alice. He leaves behind two sisters Mary and Esther, three children, Gary (Nancy), David (Denise) and Jennifer (Bill), as well as 11 grandchildren Michael, Emily, Raffi, Christina, Kati, Adrienne, Theresa, Samantha, Nicole, Jessie and Brian, and one great granddaughter Acacia.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 23, at St. Garabed Armenian Church, 4400 Wyoming, Kansas City, MO. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Garabed Armenian Church, PO Box 24222, Overland Park, KS 66283.
